In some cities or even provinces, it is required to wear swim caps in the pool all time even if you have short hair. If you are bald or balding it is still a good practice to get used to wearing a swim hat because it can help to protect your head from the sun better than sunscreen or sun lotion, that is only effective for a limited time while you are in the water, also it helps protect the ears.

Nammu swim hat advantage

Sun protective swim hats

While any swim cap worn outdoors could provide sun protection when swimming or playing or just hanging around the water, only Nammu sun protective swim cap was designed and made especially for that purpose.

Nammu is a stylish sun-protective and UV-blocking swim cap with many advantages. Nammu designed like a bandana hat and tied in the back to give extra strength and security. Its design as a fitted bandana, and tie in the back, so it won’t fall off the head, even while being as active as you are in the water.

It also has added flap on the neck to provide even more sun protection, while still functioning as a comfortable swim cap which will not disturb you from swimming as a regular sun hat will do.

Latex Swim Hats

Latex made swim caps are very commonly used swim caps because they are available anywhere, in a variety of colors, and can be custom printed with swim team names, company logo, swim school promotion, and more. Latex swim caps usually come in one size. These swim hats will fit almost all heads sizes and are easy to stretch to fit most head sizes. They can give good protection from the water when pulled down low over the ears. Most competitive swimmers use a latex swim cap because they provide good hydrodynamics.

The disadvantages of the latex caps:

  • It can be hard to put them on and have a tendency to roll up at the edges and pull hair along.
  • These swim caps do not cover the ears all the way down, so water can get into the ears.
  • Latex swim caps are very thin and delicate. Therefore they are hard to take care of.
  • You have to be very careful not to rip it by puncturing with a fingernail or sharp object.
  • If the latex swim cap is not pulled down all the way they can “pop off” the head.
  • Some adults and kids have a latex allergy and therefore should refer to wearing a latex swim cap.
  • Latex or rubber swim caps have many styles, and colors and they are very smooth.

Silicone Swim hats

Silicone swim caps are very sleek and similar to the latex racing caps, they are usually made in one style and come in one size fits all. Originally designed as an alternative to latex rubber caps because they do not cause allergy. Soon enough silicone swim caps become very popular for their shiny colors and designs. These caps have been very streamlined. Silicon is a more durable material than latex with a smiler design. Swimmers can get many years of use of a silicone swim cap even if they swim every day. Silicon caps cost more than latex caps, sometimes two or three times more expensive than a latex swim cap.

Silicon caps mostly come in one size, so that it will fit well to swimmers with small to medium-sized heads and short hair, but swimmers with larger heads or lots of hair and long hair may find these caps too tight and small. The silicone material is very slick so the swim cap must fit tightly on the head or they will slip off. The opening in these caps looks very small but they do stretch well. They are promoted as caps that won’t pull your hair off, but they do. This statement applies only when removing the caps but they are hard to put on and can hurt the head while swimming. They have a tendency to go up on top of the ears, so they have to be pulled down well all the way. Some swimmers use conditioner on their hair before putting on the cap or wet their hair by doing so the silicon caps can slip on easier, but can also slip off even if you still want them on your head. Silicon caps are available in a large variety of colors and in swirled multi colors and printed design.

Lycra and Fabric Swim hats

Lycra swim caps are made mostly of stretchy Lycra and nylon, the same material used in most swimwear. They will not keep water out of the hair and ears. Very light in weight and do not pull on the hair, therefore ideal swimming caps for swimmers with long hair who don’t mind it getting wet but still want to keep hair out of their eyes and prevent it from tangles into their goggle straps. Some swimmers wear these caps under a latex or silicone cap to keep their hair in place and prevent pulling from the other cap. This way they get the benefits of both swim caps; no water and no pulling. Some swimmers wear it over a latex or silicone cap to hide the inner cap with one that better matches a swimsuit like a custom made from the same swimsuit material, using the lycra swim cap as a fashion statement in the pool.

Because of their design, lycra, and other fabric swimming hats, get soggy and stretchy after a few uses. This makes these swim caps to be too big and not fit the head properly, therefore, these swim hats fall off the head, while swimming or when diving in the water. resulting in a need to frequently replace them with new bathing caps.
